MMSys 2017 committees have decided to offer a Best Paper Award and a Best Student Paper Award to the submissions with the highest technical merits. Furthermore, a small set of high-quality papers may be invited to be extended into TOMM submissions, and undergo fast-track reviews.
In conjunction with ACM MMSys 2017, being held in Taipei Taiwan, the DASH Industry Forum is proud to announce the establishment of the
DASH Industry Forum Excellence in DASH Award
This award offers a financial prize for those papers (Research Track only) which best meet the following requirements:
- Paper must substantially address MPEG-DASH as the presentation format
- Paper must be selected for presentation at ACM MMSys 2017
- Preference given to practical enhancements and developments which can sustain future commercial usefulness of DASH
- DASH format used should conform to the DASH IF Interoperability Points as defined by http://dashif.org/guidelines/
Three levels of prize are awarded
- First place – €1000
- Second place – €500
- Third place – €250
- Winners are chosen by a DASH Industry Forum appointed committee and results are final.
- If papers of sufficient quality are not received, then some or all of the awards may not be granted.
- The competition is open to any individual, commercial or academic institution. No preference is given to DASH IF members and membership is not required in order to participate in the competition.

The 27th ACM SIGMM Workshop on Network and Operating Systems Support for Digital Audio and Video

The 27th ACM SIGMM Workshop on NOSSDAV, will be co-located with MMSys 2017 in Taiwan. As in previous years, the workshop will continue to focus on both established and emerging research topics, high-risk high-return ideas and proposals, and future research directions in multi-media networking and systems, in a single-track format the encourages active participation and discussions among academic and industry researchers and practitioners. Out-of-the-box ideas are particularly welcome.
The 9th ACM Workshop on Mobile Video

ACM MoVid 2017 solicits original and unpublished research achievements in various aspects of mobile video services. The focus of this workshop is to present and discuss recent advances in the broad area of mobile video services. The workshop will provide an venue to discuss widely varying beliefs and understanding being formed among the academic and industrial communities in terms of how next generation mobile video services should be delivered to end users.
The 15th Annual Workshop on Network and Systems Support for Games

NetGames brings together researchers and practitioners from academia and industry across the globe to present their latest research on the challenges of today's networked games, and to further understand the requirements and explore the possibilities of future generations of networked games. The workshop welcomes submissions on all aspects of networked games. It will have a keynote
and panel discussions with participants (or invited talks) from both academia and industry.
The 9th International Workshop on Virtual Environments

Virtual Environment systems are spatial simulations that provide real-time human interactions with other users or a simulated virtual world. The workshop seeks to provide a forum for researchers and practitioners in the field, and will encourage discussions based on the presented papers to identify current and future research topics. As an intended focal point of discussion, we particularly solicit contributions related to the various challenges that recent advances in virtual reality (VR) and augmented reality (AR) pose to MMVE systems and architectures.

Open Dataset and Software Track

One aspect of MMSys that we encourage is the reproducibility of research work and the use of common artefacts (open dataset, source code, and so on). Sharing artefacts is a way to advance the field, which allows others to replicate research results more easily, to build and improve multimedia systems. This track provides an opportunity for researchers and practitioners to make their work available and citable. Authors publishing artefacts, including datasets and code, will benefit by increasing the public awareness of their effort. The accepted papers that describe the artefacts will be included in the conference proceedings and on the ACM Digital Libraries with the appropriate ACM reproducibility badge. The authors of accepted artefacts will be invited to present their work at the MMSys 2017.

As in previous years, the demo sessions will promote applied research, application prototypes and systems along with the scientific program. The sessions will not only showcase the applicability of recent results to real world problems but also trigger ideas exchanges between theory and practice and collaborations between MMSys attendees. Submissions from both industries and universities are encouraged. A submission must describe the demonstrated system and the underlying scientific problem, The novelty of the work and what is going to be demonstrated should also be clearly explained.

The ACM Multimedia Systems Conference (MMSys) provides a forum for researchers to present and share their latest research findings in multimedia systems. While research about specific aspects of multimedia systems are regularly published in the various proceedings and transactions of the networking, operating system, realtime system, database, mobile computing, distributed systems, and middleware communities, MMSys aims to cut across these domains in the context of multimedia data types. This provides a unique opportunity to view the intersections and the inter-play of the various approaches and solutions developed across these domains to deal with multimedia data types.
MMSys is a venue for researchers who explore:
- Complete multimedia systems that provide a new kind of multimedia experience or systems whose overall performance improves the state-of-the-art through new research results in one of more components, or
- Enhancements to one or more system components that provide a documented improvement over the state-of-the-art for handling continuous media or time-dependent services.
Such individual system components include:
- Operating systems
- Distributed architectures and protocol enhancements
- Domain languages, development tools, and abstraction layers
- Using new architectures or computing resources for multimedia
- New or improved I/O architectures or I/O devices, innovative uses and algorithms for their operation
- Representation of continuous or time-dependent media
- Metrics, measures and measurement tools to assess performance
This touches aspects of many hot topics including but not limited to: adaptive streaming, games, virtual environments, augmented reality, multi-sensory experiences, mixed reality, 3D video, Ultra-HD, HDR, immersive systems, plenoptics, 360° video, multimedia IoT, multi- and many-core, GPGPUs, mobile multimedia and 5G, wearable multimedia, P2P, cloud-based multimedia, cyber-physical systems, and multimedia experiences.
All submissions will be peer-reviewed by at least 3 members of the technical program committee. All papers will be evaluated for their scientific quality. Authors will have a chance to submit their rebuttals before online discussions among TPC members.
ACM SIGMM has a tradition of publishing open datasets (MMsys) and open source projects (ACM Multimedia). MMsys2017 goes one step further towards scientific reproducibility, by becoming the first SIGMM conference implementing the new ACM reproducibility badge system. All accepted papers will be contacted by the scientific reproducibility committee, inviting the authors to make their dataset and code available, and thus obtaining an ACM badge (visible at the ACM DL). The additional material will be published as Appendixes, with no effect on the final page count for papers.
Papers should be between 6 and 12 pages long (in PDF format) prepared in the ACM style and written in English. The unusual length of MMSys papers is meant to enable authors to present entire multimedia systems or present research work that builds on considerable amounts of earlier work in a self-contained manner. MMSys papers are published in the ACM Digital Library; they are available for just as long as journal papers and authors should not feel compelled by space limitations to publish extended works on top of an MMSys paper. Authors who submit very specific, detailed research work that does not require such brevity are encouraged to use less than 12 pages. The papers are double-blind reviewed.
